LECTURES
Week 1 (26/8/2021) Introduction, no lecture
Week 2 (2/9/2021) Character design basics and Adobe Illustrator run down
Stylized Designs stand out the most (Iconic, easily created, profitable). Think about what makes the character unique, and the principles of character design.Shapes - Define a character's silhouette. Sets the Iconic look.
Coloring - Draws comparison between heroes and villains. Colors have qualities that can cause certain emotions in people. Adobe Color is useful.
Emphasis and Contrast - Picking a visual element and exaggerating it. Sometimes picking a cultural element, and adding it to the design
Harmony - All visual elements stated above put together in a tasteful manner. A balance of visual elements that has a visual hierarchy.
Expressions/poses - Behavior, quirks, personalities, that are visually shown. Wins the hearts of the audience.
Week 3 (9/9/2021) Visual Hierarchy/Composition
Types of compositions - Establishing, Bird's eyeview, framing, medium shot, close-up, worm's eyeview.
Establishing - Wide lens, shot from afar, establishes context between the relationship of the important objects, and the scene.Bird's eyeview - Top down angle.Worm's eyeview - View from the ground.
Medium shot - Closer shot as compared to establishing, typically of the subject from the waist up.
Close-up - Closest shot, typically to show emotions in a scene.
Framing - Visible presentation of different visual elements in a shot.
Learned how to separate visuals as positive and negative spaces. Industry technique before they come up with environment concepts is to; find a balance of positives and negatives and take note of visual hierarchy. There is no right or wrong in composition, only bad and tasteful composition.
We were then briefed on the next exercise/task.

INSTRUCTIONS
TASK 1: EXERCISES
Week 1 (26/8/2021)
Worked on two sketch idea of characters. The one on the left being a skeleton that is to be consumed by nature, with butterflies flying and landing around it, while the one on the right is to be a sort of plant (shape inspired by a four-leaf clover), that protects riches. I chose the one on the right as I thought the left looked too bland.
Week 2 (2/9/2021)
Experimented with the vormator shapes and how I could put the shapes together to form elements of the sketch legibly.
Fig 2.1 ; Experimenting with the shapes (2/9/2021).
Week 3 (6/9/2021)
Digitalization of the vormator challenge done on Adobe Illustrator.
(10/9/2021) Card design
Fig 3.2 displays the inspiration and mechanism on how I went about designing my card.
Fig 3.3 shows the very first sketch I had done of the card
Fig 3.3 ; First card design
Week 4 (15/9/2021)
Based on feedback received from my lecturers on Week 3, I made the changes needed to the Vormator Challenge, and finished the design of the card. The concept of the card is that; A certain amount of gold is needed to play certain cards. You get +2 gold every single time it is your turn. Players can steal your gold from you, so the card "Gold Keeper," protects you from that, and gives you passive income.
FEEDBACK
Week 1 (26/8/2021) Introduction, no feedback
Week 2 (2/9/2021)
Specific Feedback - A good use of the vormator shapes.
Week 3 (9/9/2021)
Specific Feedback - The flower is too plain, observing petals, there are textures and lines, maybe try a gradient/multiple colors. Take inspiration from the Rafflesia flower and the spots it has on it. Ms. Anis likes how I did the vines.
General Feedback - Do not create tangents with elements.
Specific Feedback - Overall design is good and works, however the contrast between the brown and the gold parts of the card can be improved, try to create a darker color on the back of the card with some sort of pattern in the background (maybe a Persian Rug design?).
REFLECTION
I'll be honest, Adobe Illustrator is not my favorite software in the world, but it does have some incredible tools, like the Pen tool, I find that extremely useful. The restrictions we had with the Vormator challenge was interesting, I had a lot of fun finding ways of putting shapes together to create new shapes. Overall I enjoyed this Task and I am quite satisfied with the outcome.
