Task 1 / Exercise 1

LECTURES

Week 1(24/8/2021)
Contrast Juxtaposition of dissimilar elements
Principle of similarity – Human eye perceives similar elements as being a complete picture/design. Brain links these elements together.
Gestalt theoryHuman eye perceives complex scenes into simpler shapes, and perceives separate shapes as being a single united form.
Principle of continuationThe human eye follows lines and paths, creates a visual flow.
Principle of closureThe human eye prefers to see complete shapes. If visual elements not complete, the eye fills in the missing information.
Principle of proximityThe brain relates elements that are close to one another as being related to each other, gives structure to a layout.
Principle of figure/groundObjects and shapes are perceived as being in the foreground or the background.
Law of symmetryElements that are symmetrical are perceived as a unified group.

INSTRUCTIONS

TASK 1: EXERCISES

Week 2 (31/8/2021)
In this exercise, when it came to contrast, I decided that I wanted to contrast not only the colors, but I wanted to go a bit deeper than that, I wanted to contrast life with death.

Fig 1.3 ; Crown reference/inspiration (11/9/2021)

When thinking up the idea for contrast, I had decided to go with a skull, something that typically makes you think of the dead, evidently, with a crown typically seen on Statues of Saints, statues that typically instill a sense of peace/life into other people, shining bright gold.

Week 4 (14/9/2021)
I struggled to tackle the gestalt theory part of this exercise. I knew I wanted to based it off of the Principle of Closure, but had no ideas on how to get around to it. When doing research, I found a point of inspiration, Fig 2.2. I also decided not to try to go above and beyond when thinking of my Gestalt theory, and decided to go the more simple route.

I wanted my Gestalt's theory to signify something I miss quite dearly and that is high-school. That and the fact that my last few weeks of it, while I was still taking A-Levels, I wasn't able to see any of my friends due to COVID. When seeing Fig 2.2, I had imagined rather than there being heads, there would be hands, like students raising their hands to answer a question or call on their teachers to ask a question.

FEEDBACK

Week 3 (8/9/2021)
Specific Feedback - When working with the Contrast, make sure the crown is shining bright, brighter than the rest of the elements visible in the drawing.

REFLECTION

When working on these designs for these exercises, I will be honest, I really struggled coming up with ideas, particularly for Gestalt Theory. When seeing all my other module-mate's and friend's works, and seeing how they always had a story, I felt really stressed out as I had nothing going on in my life that I could make a story out of. But through trial and error, experimenting, and a heavy amount of research, learning that it's best to not overcomplicate my design for Gestalt Theory, I manage to produce a design relating to Gestalt Theory that I'm quite satisfied with. All in all, I enjoyed trying to generate ideas for this exercise, and I am quite satisfied with the results for both.
