LECTURES

Week 4(14/9/2021) Harmony and Unity
Harmony - A selection of elements that share a common trait, however Harmony becomes monotony without variety. All elements in the design fit together, they fit the same theme, aesthetic, or mood.
Unity - Repetition of particular elements that is looks pulled together through colors, shapes, materials, etc. The design gives a sense of oneness, creates a theme.

Scale and Proportion - Design elements relating to size. Scale is the size of one object in relation to the other objects in a design. Proportion refers to the size of the parts of an object in relationship to other parts of the same object. Can be used to distract from the ideal.

Scale - Refers to the size and dimension of figures and forms relative to a specific unit of measure. Can be determined via actual measurement and visual estimates based on comparison.

Proportion - The relationship of two or more elements in a composition, and how they compare to one another, based on size, color, quantity, degree, setting, etc. Creates harmony when a correct relationship exists between the elements with respect to size or quantity.

Week 5 (21/9/2021) Symbol, Word, and Image
Symbol - A sign, shape, or object, used to represent something else. Symbols can provide or convey information, on the same level as sentences, or even a story.
  • Pictorial Symbols - Image-related and simplified pictures
  • Abstract Symbols - Symbols that can look like the objects it represents, but with less details.
  • Arbitrary Symbols - Symbols with no resemblance at all to objects or ideas they represent. These symbols are created with the meaning constructed, leading to us having to learn these arbitrary symbols. Much like there being a meaning to an Abstract painting.
  • Word nd Image - Viewers are able to create a relationship if the right images are used in a work of design. It is important to use suitable and relevant images when designing, along with pairing the right words. A suitable typeface and strategic positioning, considering visual hierarchy and balance

Unity

Week 5 (21/9/2021)
Due to it being fall, and Halloween nearing, I wanted to make something related to it. With research, I found a painting I had really liked, Fig 1.1.

Fig 1.1; Open Shutters – John Lovett, 2006 (21/9/2021)

I really like the color scheme for this painting, and how everything is related to one another, giving it that sense of 'oneness.' Especially love the tiny details in the walls like the semi visible bricks and the color of the flowers that draw your eyes in.

Fig 1.2; Unity Sketch (21/9/2021)

So I took inspiration, and decided to make a more Halloween/Fall themed version, with a fall color scheme (Reddish/Brownish tones), pumpkins that are carved, and I added a doorbell, house number place, plants, a window, to give that sense of oneness that's observable in Fig 1.1.

Week 6 (28/9/2021)
After receiving feedback from Dr. Charles, I made changes to the sketch. The results of these changes are in Fig 2.1.

I then had an idea on how to make the scene much more dynamic. I changed the angle of the scene, and with the feedback from Dr. Charles, I made more changes and made the final sketch, Fig 2.2

Fig 2.2; Final sketch (1/10/2021)

Drawing over the sketch, I used Dr. Charles' feedback he gave me on the 28th of September, and added my own ideas too. I added the pumpkin bits on the floor, carved from the pumpkins sitting on the window sill, with the carving knife on the floor.

Word and Image

Week 6 (27/9/2021)
My main idea for this part of the exercise was to create a sort of 'cover' for a song that I had a hand in writing, organized my a friend of mine.

The context
The cover was based off of a song called 'Tylenol.' I had helped gather people to film a video for a YouTuber and friend; SoftWilly, or Nick. With these people, I also was a guest in this video. In the last part of this video, we were divided into groups, with each group writing a part of the song.

I made the first sketch of the exercise; Fig 3.1.

With that, I lined the drawing, and colored it, producing the final; Fig 3.2. Plus Nick's reaction in Fig 3.4

FEEDBACK

Week 5 (21/9/2021)
The visual hierarchy in Fig 1.2 needed adjusting, with the plants being at the bottom and the pumpkin being on the window sill to emphasize it. He recommended me to find a way to associate the window, the door, and the pumpkin together, perhaps adding a reflection onto the glass from the light emitted by the pumpkin. He gave the idea to have the door be partially opened, letting a glow from the inside be shined and seen from the outside.

There is something missing, that needs to tie the whole piece together, I had gotten the idea to have the inside of the house be visible from the outside. He gave the idea to have someone/something peaking out of the door.

Week 6 (28/9/2021)
He suggested to make the floor in Fig 2.2 to be more visible. Along with that he gave me the idea of adding a sort of knife into the scene, I decided to add a carving knife used to carve pumpkins. He suggested adding perhaps an eye, looking out from the inside of the pumpkin.

REFLECTION

The thing I found most interesting when doing these exercises was finding ways to tie everything together, for example, the inside of the house being visible from the outside angle the 'camera' is facing in Fig 2.3. I learned that I struggle maintaining good visual hierarchy, so I will be brushing up on that.
